Audio Book – Kleine Inez
Reinier van Genderen Stort (1886-1942)
Language: Dutch
Peter, the unwanted son of a distinguished family, grows after his mother's suicide, as he is six years old, with a world-aunt in Arnhem. A chance meeting with the young girl Inez, about ten years later, has a big influence on his life. This Bildungsroman mainly takes place in the first two decades of the 20th century, until the outbreak of the First World War.
According to reviewer Menno ter Braak, in 1925: "Little Inez is not a chronicle of facts, of which completeness can be demanded, but a myth of life, which coincidentally does not have Prometheus as its subject, but two Arnhem people."
Van Genderen Stort lived as a child in Arnhem, and incorporated his impressions from that time in this book. Since 1917 he was completely blind because of syphilis, so the many visual descriptions come entirely from his memories. 'Kleine Inez' was crowned by C.W. Van der Hoogt Prize, awarded by the Dutch Literature Society, and is often counted among the classic Dutch literary canon, although it is unknown to many people.
